On January 2nd 2024, the Emmabuntüs Collective is happy to announce the release of the new Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5 1.01 (32 and 64 bits), based on the Debian 12.4 Bookworm distribution and supporting both XFCE and LXQt desktop environments.

This distribution was originally designed to facilitate the reconditioning of computers donated to humanitarian organizations, starting with the Emmaüs communities (which is where the distribution’s name obviously comes from), to promote the discovery of GNU/Linux by beginners, as well as to extend the lifespan of computer hardware, in order to reduce the waste induced by the over-consumption of raw materials.

This new release of our distribution mainly concerns updates to its embedded software, except for the replacement of VeraCrypt by ZuluCrypt, made necessary by the fact that VeraCrypt no longer supports the creation of TrueCrypt volumes, and the update of the English installation tutorial for Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5.

Concerning the activity around our refurbishing USB stick, we have written a small computer reconditioning manual for people who spend a fair amount of time refurbishing computers.

The aim of this manual is to outline the various steps involved in reconditioning computer hardware, and in particular CPUs, in an attempt to rationalize the efforts of those involved in order to be as efficient as possible.

This Emmabuntüs DE 5 release includes the following changes or features :

For more details on all these changes, see the release announcements of the intermediate versions:

As of January 2nd 2024, this version can be downloaded from our emmabuntus.org site, or by using the alternate link download.emmabuntus.org.
