Raspberry Pi 5 gets 5G Modem HAT based on Quectel RM502Q-AE M.2 module

Sixfab has just launched a 5G Modem Kit for Raspberry Pi 5 with a Raspberry Pi HAT that takes Quectel RM502Q-AE 5G Sub-6GHz M.2 module working globally (except China), a “patent-pending” internal antenna for Sub-6 frequency bands designed by SixFab, and a USB 3.0 bridge connector.

SixFab 5G modem Kit for Raspberry Pi 5 highlights:

  • Sixfab 5G Modem HAT for Raspberry Pi 5
    • M.2 socket for 5G module
    • Nano SIM card holder + embedded SIM
    • USB 3.0 port and 40-pin GPIO header for connection to the Raspberry Pi 5 SBC
    • Misc
      • User button
      • Status, power, and user (GPIO21) LEDs
      • EEPROM for Raspberry Pi HAT compliance
      • 2-pin fan connector
    • Power Supply – 5V via USB Type-C port (on HAT itself)
    • Dimensions – 88.1 x 57.7 x 21.7 mm
    • Approvals – FCC, IC, CE, UKCA are in progress
  • Quectel RM502Q-AE M.2 module
    • 5G NR: 3GPP Release 15 NSA/SA operation, Sub-6 GHz
    • LTE Category: DL Cat 20/ UL Cat 18
    • Max data rates (Provided by SixFab, and they differ from the info on the Quectel RM50xQ series page)
      • 5G SA Sub-6 – Max. 4.2 Gbps (DL)/Max. 450 Mbps (UL)
      • 5G NSA Sub-6 – Max. 5 Gbps (DL)/Max. 650 Mbps (UL)
    • Host interfaces – USB 3.1 or PCIe 3.0
    • Dimensions – 52 x 30.0 × 2.3mm
    • Weight – 8.4 grams
  • Extra tall 40-pin GPIO stacking header.
  • Power Supply – 5.1V 3.0A DC power adaptor with universal plugs.
  • Plastic spacer kit.
While the Quectel RM50xQ series module can support GNSS, this is not implemented in the Sixfab 5G modem kit for the Raspberry Pi 5. The Quectel module is supposed to support either USB 3.0 or PCIe Gen 3.0 host interface, and instead of using the PCIe FPC connector, Sixfab decided to use one of the USB 3.0 ports on the latest Raspberry Pi SBC, probably because of the lack of documentation for the non-standard PCIe connector at launch, and it’s also slightly easier to install that way.

Seeing this design, I initially thought the 40-pin GPIO header was not used since USB 3.0 should be sufficient, but the documentation provides further details, and some of the GPIO pins are used to control a fan, turn on/off the Sixfab HAT to save power, select the SIM (Nano SIM card or eSIM), the user button, the user LED, the power LED, and something called FCP to controls the power on/off sequence of the 5G module itself.

But all those pins might be optional since the company says the kit can be connected via a USB cable to other boards and computers such as the NVIDIA Jetson Nano Developer Kit, Beaglebone SBC, Asus Tinkerboard, NXP i.MX 8 devkits, and regular PCs with both Windows and Linux drivers and tools available.

You may think that since smartphones support 5G getting a thin antenna board may not be such a big deal, but Waveshare introduced a similar Snapdragon X55-based 5G modem kit for the Raspberry Pi 4 in 2020, and it looks huge (see below) with external antennas compared to the new 5G modem kit for Raspberry Pi 5 relying instead on internal PCB antennas.
So the size of 5G Raspberry Pi kits has come down dramatically, the same cannot be said of the price with the Sixfab 5G modem kit for Raspberry Pi 5 currently sold for $450 on the company’s website. You’d still need to add a Raspberry Pi 5, a microSD card for the OS, a 5G SIM card (unless using the eSIM is an option), and an additional 5V USB-C power supply since both the Raspberry Pi 5 and Sixfab HAT need to be powered separately.

US customers may prefer to use the kit with T-Mobile since it works right out-of-box without requiring device registration, and registering the kit with Verizon and AT&T networks may require some complicated paperwork and should only be suitable for advanced users.

Notepad++ Marks 20th Anniversary with New Release.

The open-source text editor Notepad++ is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new release filled with some neat new features.

In Notepad++ 8.6 (the 238th release since 2003, for those keeping count) the Windows-based code tool adds to its extensive feature set with an improved multi-edit feature.

Now, I’m not a developer. I do a bit of basic PHP tweaking for the omg! sites, but that doesn’t require a bespoke coding environment or any advanced feature. So I don’t know how multi-edit adds to or adjust what was (apparently) available in earlier builds of this app.

A do know a few 3rd-party Notepad++ plugins have offered similar functionality for a while, including BetterMultiSelection. And a bug report requesting to ability to “transform the column mode to multi-caret on HOME/END/Arrow keys” led to this native addition.

Notepad++ 8.6 is also able to ‘remember inaccessible files across the sessions, by using empty & read-only documents as placeholders’. To enable, head to Preferences > Backup and enabled the ‘Remember inaccessible files from past session’ option.

These and other changes in Notepad++ 8.6:

  • Multi-edit
  • Session inaccessible files now remembered
  • Customise multi-select background & caret colours
  • Scintilla & Lexilla updated to v5.3.8
  • 3 line operation (delete, copy & cut) shortcuts
  • Find/Replace shows extra info in status bar to avoid PEBKAC
  • Misc bug & crash fixes
Notepad++ is free, open-source software designed for Windows, and available to download as a normal installer or a portable edition from the application’s official website or GitHub.

Despite be fooled though as you can use Notepad++ on Linux too!

You can install Notepad++ on Ubuntu straight from the Ubuntu Software/App Center app (it’s a Snap Store). Alternatively, install the Windows build via WINE/CrossOver or, if you got the l33t skillz, build it by hand, from source.

Pineberry Pi HatDrive! lets you add an M.2 SSD to your Raspberry Pi

When the Raspberry Pi 5 launched this fall, it was the first member of the Raspberry Pi Model B series to feature a PCIe interface, allowing you to add a speedy, high-capacity SSD to your DIY projects. But you need an add-on to do that.

Now the embedded system enthusiasts behind the Pineberry Pi have delivered just the thing. The team’s HatDrive! Top and HatDrive! Bottom add-on boards provide a hassle-free way to add an M.2 SSD to a Raspberry Pi 5.

HatDrive! kits come with everything you need to mount the HAT and install a drive including screws, spacers, and a PCIe Gen3-capable 16-pin FPC cable (although the Raspberry Pi 5 only supports PCIe 2).

Plug the HatDrive! into the Raspberry Pi 5’s GPIO header and connect the ribbon cable and you’re ready to go.

There’s room on the 65 x 56.5mm HAT for both 30mm (2230) and 42mm (2242) M.2 modules. It can be used for more than just SSDs, too. AI accelerators like Google’s Coral and Aaeon’s Edge Computing Modules are a perfect fit, too. Additional HATs can be added to your project via HatDrive’s 28-pin male to female connector.

If you’d like to be able to add full-length M.2 2280 modules, look no further than the HatDrive! Bottom. It’s a 90 x 56mm board designed to sit under the Raspberry Pi 5 that provides enough room to add the 80mm-long cards. A 5V 4-pin connector allows for up to 2A of redundant power.

PipeWire 1.0 “El Presidente” Officially Released, This Is What’s New

PipeWire 1.0 has been released today as a major update to this modern software for handling audio and video streams and hardware on Linux systems.

Highlights of PipeWire 1.0 include jackdbus support enabled by default, support for both old and new versions of webrtc-audio-processing, support for on-demand combined streams using metadata, the ability to copy metadata in buffers in all cases, the ability to add nodes to multiple groups and link-groups, and the ability to schedule nodes in the same ISO group.

This release also introduces a new option to expose ALSA controls as prop parameters, adds support for XDG-base directories when loading ACP configuration to override the ACP config files, adds support for pause and resume in pipe-tunnel, and adds support for uclamp to allow the scheduler to make better informed decisions about where tasks should be placed.

PipeWire 1.0 also comes with numerous improvements for better socket permissions in the system service, MIDI event recording preview in Ardour, better media.name for RAOP sinks, improved resume from suspend in ALSA, improved poll descriptor handling in the ALSA plugin, and correct handling of notify port dependencies in filter-chain.

On top of that, filter-chain also received support for new linear, clamp, recip, exp, log, mult, and sine built-in plugins, the echo-cancel module has been updated to correctly report its playback and capture streams as ASYNC to avoid running out of buffers, and both the module-rtp-sap and module-rtp-sink modules now try to bind to the specified interface.

PipeWire now also allows the specification of an array of remote names to connect with the native protocol, allows the ability the ALSA plugin to remove runtime properties like period-num, period-size, and max-latency when suspended, improves selection of BAP leader, and adds a jack_set_sample_rate() extension function.

Last but not least, PipeWire 1.0 adds the ability to handle NULL values from mmap_areas in the ALSA plugin, adds the ability to correctly enumerate the ports in all cases by getting the information of all nodes and ports before completing the jack_client_open() operation, and fixes many bugs and regression from previous versions.

For more details, check out the release notes on the project’s GitLab page, from where you can also download the source tarball if you fancy compiling PipeWire 1.0 yourself. The new PipeWire release will soon be available in the stable software repositories of some of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions for a better multimedia experience.

SparkyLinux Debian GNU/Linux 13 “Trixie”

The SparkyLinux devs are kicking off 2024 with a new ISO snapshot of their Debian-based distribution derived from the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 13 “Trixie” operating system series.

Powered by the Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series, SparkyLinux 2024.01 is the first update of the SparkyLinux Rolling series in 2024 adding all the package updates from the Debian Testing (Debian Trixie) and SparkyLinux Testing repositories as of January 17th, 2024.

One of the interesting features shipping with the SparkyLinux 2024.01 release is support for the MLVWM X11 window manager, a Macintosh-like Virtual Window Manager that offers users a classic MacOS desktop experience. Users will be able to install SparkyLinux with MLVWM using the command-line installer.

In addition to supporting the MLVWM window manager, the SparkyLinux CLI installer now also supports more web browsers, including SRWare Iron, LibreWolf, Midori, Min, Mullvad, Opera, Slimjet, and ungoogled-chromium.

Moreover, the SparkyLinux CLI installer now offers users progress output when copying files to a disk drive. On the other hand, the devs removed the ability to install SparkyLinux with the Btrfs file system on BIOS machines and the ability to install SparkyLinux with the XFS file system using the CLI installer.

Of course, you’ll still be able to install SparkyLinux with the XFS file system using the Calamares graphical installer, which has been updated to the latest Calamares 3.3.1 release in the SparkyLinux 2024.01 snapshot.

Keeping up with the times, this is also the first SparkyLinux Rolling update to ship with the PipeWire audio server installed by default instead of PulseAudio. Of course, the latest Pipewire 1.0.1 release is available in this ISO snapshot.

SparkyLinux 2024.01 is available for download right now from the official website as MinimalCLI, MinimalGUI (featuring Openbox 3.6.1-11), KDE Plasma (featuring KDE Plasma 5.27.10 LTS), Xfce (featuring Xfce 4.18), LXQt (featuring LXQt 1.4.0), and MATE (featuring MATE 1.26) editions.
1705789180197.png

While the distro is powered by the long-term supported Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series, you’ll also be able to install the latest Linux 6.7 kernel or the Linux 6.1.73 LTS and Linux 5.15.147 LTS kernels from the SparkyLinux repositories.

Installing Widevine on Chromium on GNU/Linux

Most distributions' package managers come with Chromium but without Widevine, a proprietary binary blob required for DRM protected content (e.g., Netflix or Spotify). Normally your only option to access DRM-protected content would be to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, but here are some alternate ways you can keep using stock Chromium.

Instructions are for Debian GNU/Linux amd64; should work for other Debian-based distros like Ubuntu.

Floorp Browser: A Blazing Fast Firefox Browser in Vivaldi Style...

Floorp is a free and open-source fork of Firefox that offers the same experience as Vivaldi in relation to Chrome, providing incredible performance, promising privacy, and many other customizable features.

It’s backed by a Japanese company, and to be honest, at first glance, I thought it could be resource-heavy. However, after testing it with two well-known performance benchmarking tools, Speedometer and JetStream 2, the scores were better than native Firefox, which is quite good.

For example, when I conducted the benchmark on my potato PC using both of these benchmarking tools, the scores for Speedometer and JetStream 2 were (107.25, 105.173), respectively, compared to Firefox, which scored (84.3, 64.125).

I suggest checking out the features section to learn more about the features and privacy it promises to offer, and then proceeding to the installation section for the installation guide.

Thorium Browser

Sve navedeno rezultira i većim povećanjem razine sigurnosti i jednostavnosti korištenja.

  • Obećava izvrsnu iskorištenost resursa sustava, poboljšanje korisničkog iskustva u smislu brzine otvaranja aplikacije, brzine renderiranja stranica i ispravnog pregleda svih vrsta videa .

Provedite različite testove, s različitim aspektima i scenarijima, brojem otvorenih kartica, gledanjem videa, društvenih mreža i njihovih sadržaja tijekom nekoliko dana.

The lawsuit alleges that Google spied on people who used the “incognito” mode in its Chrome browser.

Google agreed to settle a $5 billion (€4.5 billion) privacy lawsuit that alleges the tech multinational collected personal data even when users were in "private browsing mode".
The private mode on Google's Chrome browser is called the "incognito mode".
The class-action lawsuit said Google misled users into believing it wouldn’t track their internet activities while using the private mode.
It alleges that when a user accessed a website running Google's technologies, the company continued to track the users' site visits and activities despite being in "private" browsing mode.
Plaintiffs also charged that Google's activities yielded an “unaccountable trove of information” about users who thought they'd taken steps to protect their privacy.
The settlement, reached last week, must still be approved by a federal judge in the US.
Terms weren’t disclosed, but the suit originally sought $5 billion on behalf of users; lawyers for the plaintiffs said they expect to present the court with a final settlement agreement by February 24.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the settlement.

Floorp Browser: Is It The Most Advanced Cross-Platform Firefox Derivative.

The way Google has been stepping up its data collection game, it has prompted many people to opt for privacy-focused web browsers that respect their privacy by providing a secure browsing experience.

Floorp is one such web browser that I recently came across that claims to be “the most Advanced and Fastest Firefox derivative” around.

Being a fork of the popular Firefox browser, Floorp was built keeping privacy and user freedom in mind. It is a cross-platform web browser that prides itself in being completely open-source and not collecting any kind of personal information.

Some of its key features include:

  • Big on Customizability
  • Support for Workspaces
  • Robust Anti-Tracking Features

OBS Studio 30.1 Beta Adds AV1 Support for VA-API, PipeWire Camera Source.

OBS Studio 30.1 open-source screencasting and streaming app has just entered public beta testing today so we can finally get a glimpse of the new features and enhancements coming to this new release.

OBS Studio 30.1 promises new features like a PipeWire Video Capture Device source type contributed by GNOME developer Georges Stavracas, AV1 support for VA-API, multi-track audio support for MPEG-TS, HDR for HEVC over RTMP, maxRGB tone mapper for SDR in HDR Tone Mapping filter, and V1 support for WebRTC/WHIP output.

Other new features in OBS Studio 30.1 include an option for automatic cropping to bounding box, GPU rescaling options for streaming and recording outputs, channel selection for CoreAudio input devices, a Capture Card Device source type for macOS users, as well as a revamped Image Slideshow source.

“The reworked Image Slideshow source loads files asynchronously and fixes an issue where the slideshow would loop before showing all images. To change existing Image Slideshow sources to the new version, you must recreate them. Existing Image Slideshow sources will continue functioning as before,” said the devs.
On top of that, OBS Studio 30.1 beta adds HDR support for the Elgato HD60 X Rev.2, theme data search paths, Python 3.11 support for macOS and Windows, improved simple mode replay buffer settings, support for PCM audio in (fragmented) MP4/MOV, and Lua script location to search path for Lua native libraries.

Of course, there are also a bunch of bug fixes to improve things like WebRTC/WHIP streaming, offset/desynced audio track 1 with other tracks, incorrect VST window size on HiDPI display, QSV support in the Flatpak package, and audio track titles not being set in Custom FFmpeg Output.

OBS Studio 30.1 Beta is available for download right now from the project’s GitHub page if you want to take it for a spin and test-drive the new features. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version so don’t use it in a production environment.
